Dr. Norton Strange Townshend (1815-1895) was a conductor on the Underground Railroad in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. This picture was taken when he was a professor at the Ohio State University, ca. 1890. This cabinet card is from Baker's Art Gallery. The image was collected by Ohio State University professor Wilbur H. Siebert (1866-1961). Siebert began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history (AL03129).
